Bird founder Travis VanderZanden officially leaves the nest

Bird’s Travis VanderZanden’s slow motion outing is now complete. The scooter rental company Announced In a Friday night news dump that the executive resigned from his position as Bird’s chairman of the board, “effective immediately.”

Replacing VanderZanden is John Bitove, who played a role in saving Bird’s bacon last december through its merger with Bird Canada.

VanderZanden had led the micromobility company since its inception as president and founding CEO, but that all changed last year when Bird’s stock price plunge culminated in a foreclosure warning of the New York Stock Exchange. Soon after, VanderZanden resigned as president, handing the title to Bird’s then COO Shane Torchiana. torchiana went on to assume the role of CEO also several months later. At the time, VanderZanden called the shakeup a “long-planned transition.”

according to bird, VanderZanden “decided to retire (from the board) to pursue other companies.” In an equally vague but intriguing statement, VanderZanden added that he intends to go back to his “entrepreneurial roots and incubate some new ideas.”
